Who is Npower?

Npower is one of the UK’s big six energy companies. The company started life as National Power (thus the ‘N’), which was formed following the privatisation of the electricity market in 1990. The Npower supply brand was then created in 1998.

The company says its main priorities are customer service (read on for more about that) and meeting the needs of its customers. It also plays an active role in the community with its charity fundraising efforts and is partnered with Macmillan Cancer Support.

Plans for Npower to merge with SSE were called off at the end of 2018 after the two companies failed to reach a deal.

Npower offers a range of energy tariffs including standard, prepayment, fixed, dual fuel and green.

Is Npower a good energy supplier?

Npower doesn’t have the best customer service record. In 2015, the regulator Ofgem issued Npower with a £26 million fine for treating customers badly.

In the most recent Which? energy companies survey, Npower came joint 28th with Scottish Power. Just two companies ranked lower on the table and it was the first time Npower wasn’t in bottom place.

It scored two out of five stars on every category including billing, customer service and value for money.

Things aren’t much better according to Trustpilot – it has a TrustScore of just 0.5/10.

How green is Npower?

Npower is investing in renewable energy – 18.7% of its energy currently comes from renewables. Its parent company, Innogy UK, operates hydroelectric power schemes and wind farms. The company plans to reduce its carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.

Npower offers its customers a green energy tariff, and plants a tree in a UK city when you switch to it. To date, it has planted more than 120,000 trees.

How much can I save with Npower?

If you pay for both gas and electricity by direct debit with Npower, you receive a discount worth £90 over the course of a year. Npower is also part of the Warm House Discount scheme; if you qualify you could get a one-off rebate on your electricity bill.

Npower is often associated with pricey tariffs. For part of 2018, its standard variable tariff was the priciest of the big six energy companies and is often an average of £300 more expensive than the cheapest deal on the market. However, customers often find that its fixed tariffs are far better value and can save them money.
